Pays to check rings.
« on: 16.12. 2012 11:42 »
G'day all. Throwing a new set of pistons in the cafe. Bought a set of nos +40 Hepolites and they arrived with the rings on the pistons. I have bought rings that were pre gaped before but me being me, and not trusting anything I haven't done myself, I took them off to check. Five needed a bit taken of to give the correct gap but one comp ring already had 60 thou gap. Looks like a std ring was put on one piston. *eek*. So now instead of riding it tomorrow I have to find another ring. Bugga.
Cheers

used to have to gap them right enough, seen a few seizure due to young lads not knowing this ( funny that as we all knew it all).
last set I put in were gapped ok but more than I would have liked but then the rebore is to be taken into account, I don't have gear to do this

Thanks for the reminder, did a check here and looks like it's on the max side, all gaps are approx 0.013. Is that tolerable for some future use?

And some tips (or reminders) that some may find useful, marking pistons with side and direction, and marking rings if they are to be refitted (I believe it matters).

My book says 11 for the oil ring and 13 for the compression rings. I've always used 10 in road motors and 15 in racers.
If their going to be kept for re-use yes mark everything so it goes back together the same way.

HI Muskrat,
Are those the ""new Hepolite"" pistons ???
I posted about these some time ago, crap rings!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have the pistons any markings (name) on them ?
Wassel have aquired the Hepolite name for selling their far eastern made pistons
Pistons seem ok even though I found one was about 1/2 thou bigger than the other  *eek* but I had to get a NOS ringset for them

G'day John, they are ridgy didge Heps. Had a look in my spares and found a set of 71mm rings so stole one. Threw it all together and noticed a bit of a mark in one bore. Pulled the barrels back off to find a broken oil ring. Must be 20+ years since I broke one on assembly! Good job I checked.

Musky,
Did you get those pistons from the bloke in Melbourne on e-bay?
He had a few sets but some were pretty high compression.

His name is Ian Hope. He had quite lot of A10 stuff but I think he has sold most of it now, generally it was all reasonable quality but no doubt there was some not so good stuff as well.

He never leaves feedback Musky. It sounds like your set was missing a ring or had one broken one and he, or someone, just put any ring they had on the piston to make them look complete. Unfortunately there is always a risk when buying off evil bay, I know I've been caught a few times.

John (chaterlea 25) I've used two sets of those Eastern pistons now and would have to say I am quite happy with the quality of them with the exception of the rings. When you buy them you have to factor in the cost of a set of rings. Wassel are now selling them under the Hepolite name as you say but I dont know if they are supplying the correct rings with them or not. I have read that they are changing the rings but I dont know if that is correct or not.

Hi Musky, Brian and All,
I have been told that the rings now fitted are supposed to be USA made??
That said, I ordered rings for a trumpet 650 and they came in a ""new"" hepolite box
They were CRAP!!!! but were replaced FOC by the supplier, who said "just bin them"

There was sombody on here who had problems with the gudgeon pin fit on those pistons???

Cheers
