Sludge trap tube
« on: 28.08. 2013 12:05 »
I am attempting to remove the sludge trap tube from the crank of my 51 A10 G.F.
I have removed the end plugs, impact driver did the job, but now I am stumped. Other information on the net advised that a bolt was located on the flywheel to hold the tube in place. Mine does not have this bolt, perhaps this is a Triumph thing? When I look in the sludge trap from the timing side I see a funnel shaped end, (inwards) with a hole approx. 6mm through the centre which gives a clear view through the trap. Looking from the drive side I see the same funnel shaped end but it is about 1/3 of the way into the tap. I was expecting to clearly see the wider end of the tube at the drive side and be able to knock it out. Obviously not!!
Unfortunately I was unable to get a photo of any use so hope this limited description is helpful.
There is always the possibility that a previous owner modified / butchered this trap.

Russ,

I think you have the no-trap type early crank as discussed here:  http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=1506.msg10326#msg10326

The fact that some of the posts are mine is a coincidence. (Hard to avoid when you've mouthed-off as much as I have on this forum.)

Thanks Richard,
I didn't know there was such a thing so I will now begin searching.
I don't think that is the correct you-tube link.

Oops. I suppose that could have been embarrassing, but wasn't. Here is the correct link: http://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=1506.msg10326#msg10326

P.S. Regardless of what I said in some of those posts, the authoritative confirmation is from Trevinoz.

Thanks for the rap Richard, I now feel "authoritative".
I can't wait to wield my new found authority!  (What's that dear? Yes my love, immediately.)

Russ, you don't have a tube, what you see is what you've got.
Get yourself a set of Allen plugs to replace the originals.

Russ...
Pic 1 is my Small Journal
Pic 2 is a Large Journal

Small journal has the six bolts holding the flywheel and 1.461" big ends...   no tube..
The LJ has 3 bolts radially and 1.688" big ends, with the removable tube..

hope this helps..    WozzA

Thanks Guys,
All is now clear. I'm thinking I have information overload with trouble seeing the wood from the trees but this forum is sorting that out for me.
