1954 fork noise
« on: 21.02. 2013 16:20 »
Hi
My swinging arm model fork springs seem to be rubbing ( clattering ) against the shrouds. The forks are straight and the bike rides perfectly. Has anyone else had this issue before. It is fitted with long shrouds with a RGS headlamp set up.

thanks Colin

Hi Colin
Are you sure the noise is the springs clattering? not the forks topping out?
To stop the springs making noise, coat them with some heavy grease
Sometimes the fork shrouds scrape on the seal holders or on the mudguard
If you loosen the pinch bolt at the bottom yoke the shroud can be persuaded to a better position

A tip that might work...I found undoing the shroud bolts, then jamming several coffee stirrers (e. wooden lolly sticks, about 2mm thick) in the gap between the shrouds and chrome seal holders to ensure a gap between the 2 parts was present, then doing the bolts back up, worked for me, this to stop them rubbing when the forks compressed.

The top of the seal holders is "belled out" slightly to stop the shrounds rubbing the chrome away, on the part of the seal holder you can see. I guess this "belling out" might  disapear over time, as wear occurs.

As per earlier post - a "clang" when the forks fully extend is a bit of a "design feature" of the bsa forks *conf*.

My noise happens on the travel up and down and is continous as the forks move. I can actually hear the springs, but they do work well appart from that.

Thanks for replies to date.

G'day Colin. As above and excessive bush wear can make it sound worse. I saw a bloke once wrap strips of cotton bed sheet around the springs and then cover in grease to quieten them down. Don't know how long it would last but it did the job. I haven't tried it myself.
