Cooling fins paint bubbled
« on: 27.02. 2013 19:42 »
Hi,

Just picked up my Super Rocket yesterday and the paint or whatever finish there is on the cylinder housing cooling fins has bubbled, but only on one cylinder.  Has this been overheating?
What would be the best way to repair/reprint it?
Thanks, ShaunMac

left hand side as you sit on the seat perhaps ?

Might not be overheating, barrels being cast iron rust does get under the paint, it's job that needs doing from time to time unless you get them powder coated ( which some advice against).
I have a very thin flexible small diameter rat tail file that can strip off old paint between fins a treat, then coat with a heatproof paint,
Cylinder Black used to be the choice of many but lots of choice out there these days, it's a matter of personal choice I like shiny Black others prefer matt or satin finish

Thanks Bill. Yes, left as,you sit on the seat. Is there a reason why you went for that one?

Cheers,
Shaun

for some reason A's seem to overheat on that side, I read that the small hole in the left hand conrod was introduced by BSA to squirt some oil up the inside of the left pot to improve cooling , previous to this that side had given overheating problems.
Divided opinions exits on this though

Could be to do with oil being introduced from the right handside of the crank and maybe oil getting warmer and  a bit weaker flow as it passes through, don't worry about it though.

A pic once you get it fettled would please us all

Hi Shaunmac.
I have used SIMONIZ VHT TOUGH BLACK GLOSS SPRAY PAINT with great success, might not be ideal to apply on engine in frame

Well I started cleaning the old paint off today. Got a good amount off using a rotary scotchbrite medium mop. It got well inbetween the fins. Actually revealed the patent number in the casting.
The work continues!

Barbecue paint works a treat, surprised none of our Aussie chums have mentioned that  *smile*

Ah, snags. A word I've not heard since I lived in Oz for a year mid 90's. Loved the place!
