Hi John.
I think the clue is its been standing for some time, I would first drain the petrol tank and clean, check fuel tap filters then replenish with fresh fuel.

So it starts after it has been tickled?......? Does it peter out or stop suddenly?

If it starts after tickling then cuts out, the pilot jet is most likely blocked.

Yup!..... if you can keep it running by prodding the tickler it's a bunged up jet.

Its more likely to be the pilot jet but my a10 started and cut out like yours and the cause e was a blocked tickler as the tickler also lets air out as the petrol level rises, or not in my case so petrol flooded out the air inlets at the rear of the carb. I cleaned the pilot jet out several times to no avail and eventually found the problem by replacing the float side cover  (as i have a 389) with cling film and found the cling film bulged out due to pressure building up in the float bowl, also the level stopped rising before the float valve shut off.

Just a thought!

Mine is also doing the same, so is my mates new A10. I cleaned my carb out with carb cleaner and can see that the jets are clear. I am waiting for an adaptor so I can fit my new air cleaner to make things a bit richer.

I got caught out once when i had a typical idle jet blockage. It turned out it was a blocked idle jet bleed hole in the bore next to the slide. So blow or poke all the tiny holes you see! Hmmm... that doesn't sound right?

I had a similar issue with revving and cutting out and it turned out to be the needle clip. It had somehow come out and the slide would rise but not the needle, that took some working out  *conf*

Problem seems to be solved, visited 'Mayes' armed with new NGK plug caps and new leads. Between us it fired up straight away and ticks over.
The NGK plugs that John bought must have helped. will never buy any other make of plug. John will dare say be creating a thread about the oil pouring down the nearside stand leg onto his new Axminster. Seems to come from the inside cover of the primary/gearbox but not when the engine is off ???
