Swingarm spindle slot dimensions
« on: 27.03. 2013 17:18 »
Hello

I have now made myself two gleaming wheels with new rims and spokes, and my Ariel hubs that have been sitting around for years - Hurrah! But after having fitted the fixed side spindle with the sprocket, and having attched the wheel, I found that the spindle for the Ariel hub was significantly bigger in diameter, up from ca. 20 mm to 25 mm (1 inch I guess). I have now been down to the store and bought some grinding stones for my drill, but before I set to, I would like to ask if there is anything I should know that ought to prevent me from going ahead? I don't happen to have a 1956-57 swingarm lying idle, and intend to convert my 1960 to hold the Ariel hub for good. I guess one could always fit a collar to the iron hub spindle if someone in the future wanted to revert to 1960 spec.

G'day Otto, the job should be easy enough to do. A steady hand with those stones in a drill and I hope their a better quality that the crap they sell down here. Clamp a piece of flat bar on to act as a guide and take the same amount top and bottom. Yes it should be 1", I'll check my spare in an hour or so and get back to you. (5:30am now and don't wish to wake the red bellied black snake who resides under the bottom shed.) *eek*
