Speedo repair

The speedo on my '55 GF plunger is in serious need of repair. It tends to stick at 30 MPH even though I am doing over 40 and then jumps to 40 and stays there. Can anybody recommend somebody who can service these units?. I'm hoping to find somebody who can do the work in a reasonable time scale. There seem to be a few people who do repairs to Smiths speedos but a personal recommendation would be appreciated.

  I did buy a cheap Indian speedo which I intended to use while the original was being worked on but the cables are completly different. I was also wondering if mine might have bee the original as some of the reference numbers I have found for the Smiths unit fitted to the A10 are different to mine. Although faded the numbers seem to be 1550 and 467/203/N.

   Thanks for the link. I had come across this before along with a few others but unfortunately I don't have any clockmaking skills  . I just know that I would end up butchering the clock if I had a go myself. Not a problem if replacements were thick on the ground but in this case I think I'll leave it to the experts.

Hi Peter,

I can recommend Phil Woods, mine was clapped out now working perfectly since the repair. Phil can do a complete restoration including the dial and odometer numbers. I went for a overhaul and tidy up to suit the worn apperance of my bike he also recalibrated it. Postage was cheap as well with quick turnaround

I'll third that recommendation, or however far down the queue I am. Excellent service. I took a tired one over to Netley Marsh a little while back, met up, swapped it on the spot (by prior arrangement) for the same thing, freshly rebuilt, but with the correct bevel for a non-nacelle fitting which mine lacked. They had also calibrated it to suit an extra tooth on the gearbox sprocket. About £130 if I remember. Looks like new (a bit shiny for me probably!) and is dead accurate. One very happy customer.
(If I recall, one thing with a swap was it had to be 'like for like' ref the trip odometer reset spindle - ie no side-mounted version in exch for a vertical one or vice-versa. Which wasn't relevant for me - and isn't a problem anyway if you're not doing a swap.)
Next time I'm over there, I'll have another one or two in my pocket for the same treatment I hope.

I'd fix it for nothing if you were in Oz. Just sounds like the 4 leaf cam spring needs resetting.

Hope it turns out ok (sure it will) I lifted the workings out to have look to see if I could have a go myself and for once made the wise decision to leave well alone and let the experts deal with it!

Jools, you could try Andrew Rackstraw in Wellington, NZ if no luck getting a local mender, he's mentioned in other posts if you do a search. Circa 150NZD.

Thanks mate, I know of Denis Quinlan (KTT Services) he's very good I believe, but he's in sydney - I was hoping to find someone in Melbourne.
