Wheelbearing Reference?
« on: 15.04. 2013 10:33 »
Anyone have handy a reference number for A10 rear FW hub bearings?
Hopefully my local Bearing services/CBC can supply?

Fitted a set last week, the local garage had them. RLS8 and 6204. Total of $28 for front and back wheels.

that sounds really cheap fringedweller, how many of each and what make were they? I live in Melbourne and would like to get a set for that price over here. I presume they are sealed bearings, did you need to modify the housings to fit them or anything? I have a 1956 s/arm that has full width hubs so I assume they are the same? cheers

Jules, I got rear wheelbearings (full width hub) today from David at Modak. Prob a bit more expensive than the local bearing supplier, (about $40 for the 2) but not too bad.

NTN bearings, one RLS8 and a 6204 for the rear and 2 6204 for the front. 6204's were sealed and the RLS8 was sealed on one side only. Original RLS8 was not sealed at all. Pretty much standard imperial sizes, so easy to find.
Plus my local garage/ag dealer has been around for decades and carries a lot of older leftover stock, they even had the bearings for the gearbox as well.

Prices (UK) for the sealed 6204 bearing seem to range widely, with some vendors providing details of quality level while others give little information.  Branded vs. unbranded is the big differentiator, although branded product prices vary widely too.  I've seen 6204s at GBP1 (yes, one) and I've also been asked for GBP11 per bearing ("the list price is GBP44, sir"), with the main cluster of branded (SKF, Timken, 'Japanese' brands...) prices in the GBP4-6 range on a popular auction website.
In conclusion, shopping around looks essential and I think I'll be picking a branded product somewhere in the middle of the price range.

Had a nice original Super Rocket in the shop. (Yes it did have oil in the gearbox)

If I ever get to Melbourne again, I plan to get to Modak for that vintage environment and, also, for a taste of that famous Aussie hospitality  *smile* ;).

Jools, I could get the (imperial) bearings in NZ but the local suppliers (Saeco and SKF) seem to be running a cartel for any type of wheel bearing, and both wanted over $70 (36GBP) each for them!

I bought 4 of them from Draganfly for 7.28GBP each, which even with freight to NZ was much cheaper (they are surprisingly heavy). Part number 89-3022 refers for my bike. When I stuffed 2 of them I got 2 more from C+D as I was ordering other stuff from them at the time, C+D were 10.95GBP.

Note I'm pretty sure the 56/57 model years have ariel hubs, which I think use different bearings to any other model. I'm not sure what hubs your bike has?
