A10 leaky fork
« on: 30.04. 2013 11:15 »
To my dismay this morning I seem to have developed an oil leak from on my LH fork. At first I thought it may have been seeping past the oil drain screw at the bottom but then noticed that it's actually leaking from where the fork oil seal holder screws onto the bottom of the fork.

Taking the easiest option first and hoping that it won't require a full fork strip down, is it possible to unscrew the fork oil seal holder with a suitable strap wrench whilst the fork is still in place on the bike (after draining the oil obviouisly  *eek*). Then apply a little hemp/PTFE tape to the threads before nipping up again.

It is not easy as the spring pushes down quite hard but can be done as you only need to undo it 3 or 4 turns.
Number 3 jute ( hemp) twine was the original fix.
Locktite thread SEALANT ( get it from a plumbing shop ) works well.
DO NOT USE THREAD LOCKER on the seal holder or you will never get them off again.
