Dynamo chain

Whilst changing my oil pump I noticed that there was no gasket on the outer casing ? The dynamo chain looks good with the correct 1/4" play. I looked in the Haynes bible but it does not mention lubrication for this part of the motor or chain. In fact I cannot see why it needs a gasket on the outer cover ? This is my first A10 so please bare with.

 G'day Colin. You will need a gasket for the outer timing cover, lots of oil in there. The dynamo section has grease (low melting point) for lube of the chain.

Hi Muskrat.
I can see the sense in the grease on the chain, but where is the oil feeding from to the rest of this side of the engine. ?

The oil goes down to the pump and then thru to the crank via the main bush so the bottom of the timing case always has a fair amount of oil splashing around in there

Thanks for that, just to get it clear in my head. The new SRM oil pump will  pump will be submerged in oil on the out side of it's body as well doing it's job inside. this will also lubricate the worm drive, am I right ?

think I see a perspex timing case on the horizon *smiley4*

Always some oil in there right enough, would think from the main bearing bush a little, (ideally none at all)  but not too much  or big ends would starve, always oil dripping down the crankcase sides into bushes and out again so that including constant oil mist is enough to lube the gears and an occasional shot from the little jets in the gallery from the PRV when it opens.
Well they've been running for 70 to 60 years with reasonable results with or with out SRM's pump ,which I'm sure is excellent

Perspex sounds nice, save on polish.
As per normal I have learnt much this weekend. I did get a new gasket for the outer casing when I bought the pump. Will all go back together Wednesday when the locking tab arrives.

All done 1/4 lb of low melting point grease, new SRM pump and posh gasket. Nice allen screws, job done and no wet sumping so far £££££'s

It is true the Haynes manual omits the need for grease in the dynamo chain compartment. There are other errors and omissions in it also. Good to get a BSA manual reprint.

after timing the magneto, l i did start it for about 5 - 10 sec and did not splash any oil to note

I am going to adjust and grease the dynamo chain before replacing the outer cover.

Do I understand  from A10JWO that I should pack the dynamo compartment with grease?

Hello vwphilips.

You may already know this, but a little word of warning if you don't. When you adjust the dynamo chain, done by rotating the dynamo, beware that upon tightening the dynamo securing strap, the chain will get a little tighter. So, don't overdo it! A too tight chain will whine or howl.

The compartment only needs enough grease to cover the chain at the bottom of it's run. Low melt grease will liquify after a few minutes running, the chain will run through the pool (sort of like the primary).
