Finally!!! after 10 months, about a thousand miles of driving about and WELL north of a grand...we have a crankshaft! Thanks to Dave Branch for making it, Basset-Down for the quick balance job and Cambs Rebores for the (also quick) final grind. And a big raspberry to Gosnays for being obstructive time-wasting jobsworths!
Now we can get on with things.

That is a thing of beauty, a real piece of skill and knowledge, are they going into production?  How long before you put her together? Can't wait to see it, Regards BobH

As per muscrat comment and boy muscrat you have an eye for detail in photos  *yeah* *yeah*

I thought the big end oil feed oil holes were positioned to ensure particles were kept away from the oil holes by centripetal force ...and hence particles eventually become lodged in the sludge trap permanently or at least until some poor bike restorer cleans the sludge out.

Does this crank not have a sludge trap?

Nope. No sludge trap. Just a 6mm feed hole thru the middle.
We're not expecting to cover intercontinental mileages on this bike! Sludge formation isn't going to be an issue; arguably it isn't ever going to be these days with decent filtration and quality oil. Nobodys designed sludge-traps into cranks for decades.
And not having a 3/4" hole thru the middle means extra strength.

Dave Branch, who made it isn't planning any production runs! Strictly a one-man operation out of his shed. Maybe makes 5 or 6 cranks a year.

At the weekend we got the bottom end assembled. Fought us a fair bit; the main bearings were tight and there was some clearancing needed on the inner timing cover which involved fitting & removing it about 10 times.
Gapped the rings and fitted the barrels:

Got the primary drive and ignition stuff all sorted out:

And made a primary cover. Off for polishing tomorrow.

All but eliminated the whit sizes. Only ones left are those that cant be changed; tappet adjusters, nuts on rocker shafts, cam & crank nuts.
Incidentally; anyone know what the right spanner size is for the cam nut & crank worm? Its not any whit size that I have. Nearest is 20mm.

That would be 25/32" AF.
Not a common spanner.

Getting there; not plain sailing! Sometimes seems like every last bolt is fighting me!
David got most of the wiring done today. We just have the fluid lines & the cables to do really. Waiting on fittings.

Yknow if I built anything that looked so nice I wouldn't take it anywhere near salt, but that's hardly the point I know
