single seat for swing arm A10
« on: 23.11. 2008 13:17 »
Hey all
well i have my new (2 me) A10 running quite nice, at least as much as one can ride in 30 F weather - I
got the BCS oil filter kit bolted straight up as Alex had suggested etc.. and despite the lack of a choke she is firing up with a little persuasion

anyway
wanted to know if anyone knows if the swing arm A10s came with or had the option of  single seat and if/where the bits can be $ - I'd like to switch my 61 to a solo saddle and hoping the parts can be bought easily and bolted straight up and avoid any custom fabrication etc if possibly (to cold in the unheated garage to spend time without gloves and what not on)

thx!
mike

so do you want a single trials type seat or the lycette style as found on the plunger?

they are both pricey, but the lycette was not really meant for a swingarm.  I did it with a repop lycette, if you want info on that one I'm happy to share what I did, but it wasn't pretty. ;)

Hi Mike,
I have a photocopy of a roadtest from Cycle magazine (September 1954) which shows a brand new one from the showroom with a Lycette saddle.
They go straight on, there are 2 threaded tubes welded onto the frame as standard, these are for the bolts to attach the saddle springs. Its an easy job to fit.Don't know what size the thread is mine even had the bolts in place.
I had one on mine for a for a while. I rode from Edinburgh to Great Yarmouth in a day, 3 days later I could still feel the outlines of the saddle frame springs on my bum, and had to get back on the bike and ride home! Not very comfortable.

I think it was a bit wide for the bike, Though I believe they come in 2 sizes.
Or you might be better off with something like this.

I ended up with a cut down dual seat and the bumpad. The back mudguard being too short for a dualseat .
I felt the sprung saddle cluttered up an A10s clean lines, especially combined with those pipes which I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with.
Go for it if its what you want though.
Cheers,
Iain

I agree that the lycett seat doesn't really look right on a swingarm A10.  I think what you want is an A10/Gold Star scrambler seat.

Now, these arent' particularly easy to come by, but I believe Burton bike bits in ol' blighty sells one:
Alex

Too many BSA's

Hi Mike
If it's any help, there is a Spitfire scrambler seat on Ebay right now, Item No 350063201549.
There is also Pillion/bum pad at Item No 120195689858.
Both items are brand new.

Good luck

Thx all
lots of options seems like -  looking at few choices makes me think you guys may be right about single seat lycett type looking a bit off  for a swing arm a10, at least in the large type - i have found a smaller lycette type seat that is 12" wide (compared to the standard 16") - hate to purchase (that poor american $ and all)  and end up hating it  - so i guess i'll pull stock seat off and try to imagine what it might look using cardboard mock ups etc...

those solo seat sure look sweet on the plunger frames though!

 Thx again
mike
