Speedo Cable Fitting A7 (1959)
« on: 29.07. 2013 23:26 »
Hello!

Well my first technical enquiry - hope you can help.

Had issues with my speedo last week - very erratic and all of a sudden was doing 120mph (45mph) then 20 then 50 etc - the gearbox end of cable fittings were loose, so I tightened - still not great but working just enough to get by. The cable outer is damaged down that end so I thought I'd fit a new cable to solve the problem.

Trouble is I can't get the old cable off the gear box end - undone the cable sleeve nut, also loosened the nut that buts up to the gear box. I can see the cable entering the gearbox but it won't come out - excuse ignorance but do I need to do more than this to release it? I had expected it to simply pull out when the outer sleeve was loosened.

Help much appreciated!

All the best,
Fredl

You dont need to loosen the nut up against the gearbox Fredl. Once you have undone the cable sleeve nut the cable should come out. The cable has a square shaped end on it and that just pushes into a square hole in the speedo drive, same as it does up at the speedo end.

For some reason yours has stuck in but grab the cable with some pliers and give it a good pull and hopefully it will come out.
