Frame thickness ?
« on: 05.09. 2013 17:31 »
Hi Lads.
I am having my side stand lug welded onto my swinging arm frame. My welder has asked how thick the frame tube is. Without cutting the frame and measuring it I cannot answer him. So I am asking the forum experts. I think he is going to MIG or TIG the joint, any imput is most welcome for me and my mate Trevor.
Regards Colin

I would not get it welded. It would be better to get it brazed.

 Colin,

May I ask where you got a side stand lug?

My frame has the side stand fitments and also the fuel tank fittings shaved off, "Easy Rider" got a hold of this bike in the early '70s. *sad2*

Most new sidestands come with both lugs Colin, some like the one I bought need a little hole filing to get them to match the original lug if it's still there.

I was quoted two prices for a sidestand 17 UK£ or over 100 UK£ for British made (this is a few years back) I'm not tight, I like to use the best I can afford but just too much that time (If the stand breaks and the bike falls over you lot will be the LAST to know  *smile*)

Yep I did the same Bill. And yes it broke but I caught the bike before it hit the ground. The cheap ones are cast and break, the dear ones are forged and will bend before breaking. It is a clamp on type so I just tack welded the clamp to the frame to stop it twisting. *work*

My stand is from an old 1960's Triumph Bonnie and appears quite strong. However the is no lug on my frame. I will be riding the bike to the welder who is going to open his workshop on a Saturday for me. Therefore the engine etc will be is situe at the time. Not a lot of room for a brazing torch. I am greatful for the replies to date including PM's. Just to make things worse I have no centre stand lugs, apart from that a really nice bike.

Hi Muskrat.
The tack weld you mentioned is what my chap has in mind, is that MIG or TIG. Did your frame get damaged, as you can guess I am not a welder.
Have a nice weekend.

G'day Colin, this is the cheap type I got and just mig tacked it to the frame in two hard to see spots. Get the position perfect before tacking. No ill affects.

Cheers

The frame tube is about a tenth of an inch thick there. tapping it with a hammer should tell him that. I guess he's asking because he wants to use a large a weld as possible, but just a heavy duty tack weld might be better if the bolting part is good.
