After it's initial build and running on 20/50 my motor had a big tendency for wet sumping. I stuck a sprung valve in the feed side - from Britie (sp?) I think.

At just 250 miles and still running in I had a full seize on the main bush - and within a half mile from my house. I had Roger at Cakes St pull it down and reassemble. He reckoned that the main bush would have been a little tight on clearance. I am of the view that in all probability the oil below the valve ran through the pump and then as some have suggested here the pump failed to prime on next start up. Of course, if I'd checked oil return before heading off then I should have seen this.

I now run straight 40 with detergents and a return side filter. I have no valve fitted. With the combination of Roger's build and use of thicker oil I get no wet sumping at all, even after months of standing. If I did have cause to fit a valve then it will be of the manual type - and somehow set up such that there was no way I could miss switching it before heading off.

Unless you found something completely stuck inside the springed valve, it may have been the pump had emptied.

The return chamber of the pump being separate and probably well primed (got it's own ball valve in the scavenge pipe) all could have looked fine for a while (while emptying the sump), so unless waiting until oil return eventually stopping, one may well have been riding off thinking all was well (ref. alanp's earlier post).

I'd say any pre-pump mounted valve should include some arrangement\parts\modification for an oil pressure sensor, triggering a big, bright red light (+ a relay engaging the horn lol).

That is an excellent piece of equipment, the best I have seen so far.

I do have one concern though and that is there is nothing to lock the tap in the open position. Now I realise if the tap was to shut due to vibration or any other means the engine would stop which is the whole point of the design.

I thought maybe if the tap handle had a "V" shape in it that the rounded point of the electrical switch plunger located in when the tap was in the open position then this would hold the tap in the open position and not affect the current design and operation.

I think it's been done before, but no matter.

I don't class such interlocks as safe. If the switch fails to close the kill switch circuit, through dirt or corrosion, that's a "fail to danger."

Yes indeed it has many times, on forums like this it seems that certain topics are cyclical??? appearing regularly every so often!!!!!!!!

On a previous bout on this vein I attached this picture of such a device from 1928 (att again here)

On "ironjohns" device I think its value depends at which point on the plunger stroke that the contacts will make or break ?????

Enjoy the Hols  *smile*

That's the place where the check ball lives.
Good luck getting the screw out.
When you do, reseat the ball, fit a new one.
You will have to give the ball a decent whack to seat it.

I have resisted sharing this link because it is a bit embarrasing and tedious. It even has a typo in the title. Neverthless, as long as the subject of removing the oil-retaining ball, spring and grub screw has come up, I might as well let it out.
