+ vs - ground (earth)?
« on: 22.01. 2014 20:03 »
Most all 12V vechicles are negative ground.

I believe all a7s and a10s were originally positive ground.

I'm planning a switch to a DVR2 regulator for my 1960 A7.
Is there any reason to switch to Neg. ground ?

What are the pro's & con's?

The dvr2 can cater for - or + ground, you just need to order the right one to suit your bike. But I think you have worked that out already?

One good feature is you csn configure the dvr2 for 6 or 12v so in my case if I upgrade to 12v I do not have to buy another dvr2 unit.

I have gone 12v through DVR2 and V-reg on both my A's and left them +ve to save confusion (lots of that in my shed).
I'm not sure if it makes a difference if you want to use led globes  *dunno*.
What happens if a +ve bike touches a -ve bike? Will sparks fly? I park the BSA very close to the rHonda.

I assumed, if converting to 12V., it would be better to have (-) ground and be like all other 12V vehicles.
Just wanted to know what others have experienced.

Search google for some interesting info about + grounding > example. Some posts about it here on the forum somewhere.

I seem to remember something way back about Pos earth being better for deposition on contact points (never understood this as surely deposition would just shift from one point to the other)
However if there were some truth in this theory then it would be negated for electronic ignition so for that Pos earth would be the norm.
Doubt if it makes one iota of difference on a 60 year old A of dynamo type, altanator would be a different thing thogh with a zenner involved and as has been mentioned LEDs of course for the same reason.
But we live in a world of ever changing theories
