Dont let this happen to you...

Dont let this happen to you...

The other day I fired up the BSA after 3 or 4 weeks sitting in the shed...
1st kick & she fires into life......  whilest warming her up she started running on one cylinder...   *eek*   *pull hair out*

I pulled the Left plug lead... which I suspected was the offending cyl..  yep, no difference...

so I shut her down & got off only to find a POOL of engine oil dripping from the primary side..

this is the point where I was thinking I had blown her up...  *countdown*

I took out the Left plug which was oiled up... & the top of the piston was also oily...

When I got a rag to clean up the oil from the concrete & noticed the oil was coming from BEHIND the inner primary cover...

at this point I realised it was coming from the breather hole in the cases...

Hmmmmmm...   then it dawned on me, *bright idea*  She's wet sumped..
Maybe I should have checked the oil tank level & drained the sump before start up ...

I removed the sump plug & got about a litre of oil.....  topped up the tank... cleaned up the plug...

gave her a couple of kicks & she fired into life again...   ALL GOOD...

Lesson learnt.....    & all smiles again...    *wink2*

The thing to do is to find out how long you can safely leave without getting oil out of the breather when I had my Gold Flash I could leave it for 2 weeks and it would start up no problems leave it for 3 weeks and you would get blue smoke from the exhausts for about a minute or so but leave it 4/5 weeks and you would get oil out of the breather onto the garage floor. So start the bike every 2/3 weeks over the winter storage then no problems.

Last ride in September ,forgot to run her up first and topped the tank, result a moving oil streak about 6 miles long with a very embarresed me at its head, in Southport lady in a car  looked out of her window and said "Lovey bike but should it be doing that! " by which I discovered my stupidity ,oil was gushing all over the place I rode very gingerly back home by which time the level had settled and all was back to normal, felt a complete prat but no real harm done, I hope ,regards Bob

It's the 1st time I've ever experienced wet sumping to that extent...
My Harley also wet sumps, but the oil pump just pumps it back into the tank..

The reason I posted was to give any new players a idea of what can happen when it does...
I never knew the symptoms ...   but now I do...   *red*

bsa-bill...  *clap*  I think I'd rather use a GPS to find my way home..     *yeah*
