New Smiths digital instruments
« on: 02.02. 2014 16:55 »
Hello Folks!

I tried to launch a debate on the new range of digital Smiths instruments manufactured by the firm Puca. They have recently updated their website, so they must mean business. http://www.puca.co/ I just wanted to ask again if anyone have any experience with them?

There is now a distributor of the new gauges in the US.

No personal experience with them yet but just something I ran across.

The prices aren't too bad. I think they'll sell.
They'd have to be better than the Indian one I got.

I bought one of the speedos from India for a Norton single I have. It looks pretty good but the gauge is to tall fro me to be able to fit the headlight back into the shell. The reflector hit the speedo. I don't know if that would be a problem on an A7/10 or not.

Yes Bob I got it working OK. The needle wavers a fair bit, but it's not too far out for accuracy. I did have to marry an Oilfield and A10 cable (marriage not maid in heaven).

Hi All
The tech data page, http://www.puca.co/tech.html
It states that it will work with 12v pos or neg earth systems
It suggests that the system will work on a magneto ignition bike with
"a suitably placed HT signal amplifier."
BUT then states
"The use of good quality suppressed spark plug caps is important to ensure a reliable signal for the digital tacho "

This is a contradiction to normal Magneto advice  *????* *????* *????* *????*

More research required?? someone with both mag and coil ignition bikes to try it on each ???

Regards

This GPS speedo could be the go.
They offer a lifetime guarantee as well.

DITTO:
I just complained to the Indian supplier that it does not fit BSA cable as stated in the description...
they refunded money & I kept the speedo...   *smile*

When I wanted to test my speedo's accuracy I downloaded a GPS speedometer app on my phone. Tested it for accuracy, ease of use etc in the car. It was remarkably close, sometimes lagged a second or two... Made sure the phone was secure on the steering damper of the bike and it worked a treat. Not sure I'd want to do that to my phone on a regular basis though.

not sure Gavin that all GPS systems take terrain into account  so going up and down a hill you will travel further than GPS will estimate.

I know some agricultural ones do The John Deere system for example records height above sea level and  tilt (side to side and yaw), maybe other systems have the same capabilities - dunno
All the best - Bill

1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco
