A10 Steel Conrods

Hi All,
I just saw these on the MAP cycle website
The price is good,
Has anyone the original rod weights to compare them to?

Pity they aren't for Plunger models. a mate will be getting his rebuilt soon.

They'd fit a plunger with a large-journal crank.
There would be little point in fitting heavy duty 4340 rods to a small journal crank.

 From memory the stock LJ rods are ~360 grm, 110/250 (top/bottom), I'll have to hunt down the notes I made.

 Thunder Rods are  440 grm- 130/310

HI All,
So it looks as though these steel rods are almost the same as the Thunder rods ??

MAP steel rods,
    120.4 gram small end
    320 gram big end
    440.4 grams total

I have a set of MAP alloy rods but have not looked to see what the weights are ??

I used Thunder Engieering rods in my engine build, 3000 miles so far and going fine, I did not bother to rebalance the crank to allow for the rods not being std. I only really notice a bit of vibe over 50 mph, but it is not particularly excessive and still not a problem at 75mph, but I've not ridden another A10 to compare it too....well that's not true I did ride one in the 70's....

Thats where I first saw them, Same price as from MAP direct $US 450 a pair
The MAP rods's I got are alloy, I got them sent to a friend in USA who then brought them
over with him on his next trip  saving me quite a packet 

In Sept 2011
SRM rods were £336 = $US 525
Thunder Eng    £318 = $US 500 (including post)

The MAP rods at time time worked out at about $US 370

Theres interesting reading on the R&R website discussing the relative merits of alloy vs steel rods
According to an ebay seller these are the "W" brand rods ??

that thunder engineering cost looks high, does it include 20% vat ? if so then vat does not get charged if they are being exported, like mine were, I think I paid 250gbp plus freight a couple of years ago.

That was including VAT and delivery to Ireland, Vat on £15 delivery too !!

thanks for this info on the relative weight of the billet alloy vs std, vs MAPcycle steel rods
Given all the original rods are now coming on 60-70 years old and subject to fatigue, I'm moving towards steel rods for my next rebuild. If the comparative weights are accurate, the big end increase being primarily rotational will have less effect and the steel rod small end appears to be closer to std than the billet rod.

Will still pay to try and keep piston weight down but I'm convinced. Mind you my steel capped alloy rods have coped with a lot of abuse (only using 6" rods though)
