New Conrods?
« on: 06.02. 2014 19:36 »
I have just received what I was led to believe were old new stock con rods - Part No 67/1160.
Whilst they are exceptionally clean and all of the machining marks are perfect there is the imprint of the shells - now what is required to make these imprints (other than shells!) or would just sitting on a shelf for all these years make them?
My dilema is should I rely on these - are they new?

Hi Nourish,
A close up pic of the big end area might help?
Its possible that they were supplied with shells fitted originally
Sometimes its possible to see tha size of the shells last fitted imprinted in the rod
Whether new or not I cant say from the pic supplied, were they from a reputable supplier or ebay ??
Are the rods marked from where the nuts would have been tightened?

If you decide to use them, I would polish them to a mirror finish and remove any roughness, dinks etc
The alloy polishes really well  *smile*
This also relieves stresses in the rods

I would not take the chance with 1950s alloy so would sell them on ebay and put the proceeds towards some new and much stronger hi spec alloy rods from Thunder Engineering top quality and no small end bushes £300.

You'd think they'd have the sense to polish the marks off.

G'day Nourish. They look new from here. 1st test would be to put a gudgeon pin through both the little ends and look for a gap at the big end. now turn one rod around and re-check, look for difference in gap. Now turn the other one around and look for same. If their straight and not twisted I'd use them after a polish.
