Hi Shaun.
If the paint is only chipped around the lock, this is the top cover, which is separate from the nacelle. You will only need to remove the top nuts (Chrome fork nuts) and the cover should come off.
If you decide to strip the forks, disassembly is easier than reassembly, as the difficult bit is gettting the fork back into the yokes, a tool is available to assist, I,ve used broom handles filed down to fit, but then made a tool from one of the Chrome fork nuts. You will find loads of tips under the forum search function.
Working on your bike front end is easier if you jack under the engine or frame, also consider hoist from garage roof.
If you decide to strip the forks further, consider seal and or bushing change, this is when the fun begins, with circlip and seal holder removal.
