Has anyone out there found a good substitute for a early plunger side stand??  I cant believe im saying this, but it doesn't even have to be BSA....!
Needless to say im getting quickly fed up with my main stand.... honestly, whos design was that?! :)

There are some decent clamp on ones on ebay, but you need to measure what diameter you need. Using them on two bikes so far. Just don't commit the sin of trying to start your bike on the stand.

Yep. Broke two doing that. But in my defense it's 10.5:1 and a high primary ratio.

 Not sure what you mean by 'early plunger'..?, but for my ~'52, I decided I like the late A65 lightning type ones and it works fine, but long time since I fitted it and may have needed to fettle the lug to change the angle..?

By early i meant 53.  Yeah, i think i would prefer to mount a stand to the existing lug rather than getting one with a clamp.  If i need to do a little tweaking to get the angle right then so be it :)

I modified a Triumph stand to fit onto my existing frame lug. I had to shorten the leg and I welded on a new disk to stop soft ground sinkage. The top end fitted the BSA frame lug width-wise but I had to remove metal from the stand, (and unfortunately the BSA lug) to make the stand go forward of 90 degrees. The Triumph spring worked ok.
The machine stands a little too upright on the side stand; I need to choose a suitable spot to park. I should have taken a bit more metal off, but on the other hand the side stand is getting less bending pressure on it.

Thanks for the reminder  Grayb.- I also had to play with the spring lug on the frame, so the spring clears the bolt head, so rather than bastardise the lug which is too short, made this little do-dad lug extension and used the matching spring.
  Not trying to flog this idea- just flogmaking sure you know all

Update:  I have just fitted a Triumph T120 side stand and it works perfectly :)  The bike is leaning at a decent angle.  Now i just have to modify the spring lug to get pivot bolt clearance....

 i ordered a clamp on stand from e bay £25 if i remember ,i just had to open up the holes on the stand side clamp and it fitted great
the stand came from india though, but looks ok if you wish i can try to dig out the invoice

Hi all, I have fitted a stand similar to the original BSA stand on my 59 A10 but find it difficult to get my foot on it to bring it down as it fits well under the left hand exhaust. Might have to fit an extension on the bottom end to make it a bit easier. I also had the problem of the bike standing up too vertigal and the possibility of it falling over, so ground out the stop area of the stand, not the lug, to bring it forward a touch more and am much more confidant it won't fall over if stood on flat ground. Always stand it with back wheel to the curb so it stands slightly up hill due to the road camber. Cheers. Gerry

Hi all,
I fitted an after-market side stand (sales on ebay) on both of my heavy Bikes (BSA and Motosachoche). Works fine, no welding on (rigid) frame, only fixed on the sidecar Mounts and reasonably priced. My experience is that the fixing near the rear wheel makes it a firm and stable stand. The original welded stand often shows  the problem of breaking the Frame (see picture)
