Brake adjuster, Ariel type (II)
« on: 31.08. 2014 13:10 »
Hello All

I'm trying this again, this time with picture. The knurled adjuster fouls the mudguard stay. Is this because I have Goldie guards instead of the correct RR item? Or can you get brake cables with smaller diameter adjuster?

Cheers, Otto

Looks like a degree of incompatibility, is it the 'correct' wheel for the forks...?

You might be onto something there duTch. A full side on photo will tell Otto. Looks like 58 on forklegs with 56-57 hub. The adjuster is part of the cable and different to any other BSA type so would all have the same adjuster.
Cheers

Yeah, as there's a lot of things bits on mine that aren't 'correct', but are correct 'cos they work for me, I didn't like to use the word- matching would've  maybe been better

Hello

Here is the hub seen from the side. I bought the hub years ago, and only made up the front end last year, with new rims etc. The lower fork legs was the result of much searching, so I hope they are the correct RR items 42-5051 and 42-5050. The spindle is stainless from Lightning Spares. It fits nicely, and the right hand side legs suits the hub exactly.

Looks good from that angle to me Otto. May be the angle that the stay comes in at that creates the problem (eg different guard).
Cheers

Otto, just one thing struck me after nearly going cross eyed looking at the pictures. Your brake anchor strap. Is it slightly longer than Wozzas? and different style  That would have the effect of turning the back plate round and moving everything closer to the stay. Could just be my eyes but worth a look BobH

Yes BobH; my stay is actually an Ariel item, I did not contemplate that there might be a difference between the BSA and the Ariel variant. It was tough enough to find... Must look for a genuine BSA one.

I think Muskrat is right; I have looked in my picture files, and all I find looks like the stay I have. But on the issue of the slimmer adjuster I have attached the 1956 sales brochure picture of the beloved RR, and this shows an adjuster without the large diameter knurled screw. If the original design was available somewhere, my problem would be solved.

I see what you mean Bob,good thought, but the brake cam spindle seems to be in the same relative place, looks like Wozzas guard stay scoots up at a steeper angle though....like has already been covered..?

Ah well ,back to the drawing board !!  See what you mean about the angle of dangle of the stays Dutch . I'll wait to see how this is resolved, BobH.
