Excess oil in timming cover

This might be a silly question but should you have any oil in the timming cover around oil pump?? oil definately is returning back to tank and I do have good oil flow every place else and I dont here any out of place noises..This is a 1955 Plunger A10

Yes mate, you'll catch about 1/3 cup when the cover is removed.

When the oil reaches the predetermined level the excess returns to the sump through a hole in the case.
