hub adaptor
« on: 19.03. 2015 19:40 »
just  put the clutch back together ( 4 spring ) new rollers & a new hub adapter, got a problem with it it's as if the pushrod is now to short ie the clutch leaver is about at the handle bars before theres any movement at the clutch also it looks like the chain wheel ( basket ) is a slight bit further out than it used to be, when i fitted it all together i gave the hub adaptor a couple of good tap's with a small hammer to make sure it was fully home, it went together no trouble at all.  was just thinking maby the new hub adaptor is a slight different to the old one,  anyone else had the same problem?

I assume, as it's a 4 spring clutch, it sits on a taper shaft? If so the adapter's taper hole could be a tad smaller than the old one. Doesn't need much to make it sit significantly less deep on the shaft.
Also, if you fitted the woodruff key, it's possible that its the key that prevents the adapter to slide fully home.

Derek,
First check your primary sprockets are aligned with a straight edge, this will tell if your adaptor is on far enough.
If OK, adjust the pushrod to suit.

I dont know about the triumph clutch centres but there is a well known issue with some 6 spring centres having incorrect tapers causing the sort of problems you are having, and suppliers that keep selling them even when they are aware they are no good, maybe compare your old one with the new one?

New plates if you ftted them will probably result in having to adjust the clutch of course *smile*, but would not cause the chainwheel to be out of alignment.

There is provision to shim the front sprocket if the mis alignment is not too big?

Hi Derek,
What else did you change at the same time? new clutch plates will affect pushrod length
Yes there are a lot of "different" interpetations of the adaptor  *sad2*

There are a lot of previous postings on the subject  *????* *????* please do a search and then ask if you need more clarification

It is vitally important for reliability to get the primary sprockets properly aligned *warn* *warn* *warn*
You dont want the chain to snap and do wreck *pull hair out*
