When woodworking I'm quite happy to use a piece of string pinched at the right length by my thumbnail; or if cutting a piece of wood in half for a non-precision job just balance it across the saw blade to find the midpoint.

works just fine unless one side has a couple of knots in it, Then  the old grey beard might get a tug or two *doh*
