Yep. T&L have been mentioned favorably on the forum several times.  Probably a great choice. I'd be curious how much cheaper they would be than SRM.

I don't mind delving into most things RichardL but think if the old girl needs to some "extra special" TLC (maybe even roller bearing conversion) then I would rather give someone who owns more than just a set of spanners and a lot of goodwill the chance to resurrect her. That way I have someone to bollock if it goes wrong :-)

...or, for example, you want to ride some time this year.  *smile* ;)

I take it this means you won't be opening up the cases to give us a peek. Oh, the buildup to the let down.

Keep us posted, if you don't mind.

Ride this year, might have to give this one a miss, might get some some stove enamelling done at the same time.

Will keep you all abreast as to what's found "deep in the gunnel's" when I get around to shipping it off for repair. Still a little disappointed as I regularly change the oil every 1000 miles and always watch for the oil returning to the oil tank before I set off, can't think why the bearings should have failed so spectacularly.

Brucie

I've been blabbering a lot about your woes. There are sooo many other folks able to comment on this that I just want to sit back and hear what they say. (You may need to wait for Oz wake up.)

Yawn, open eyes, flick nerdbox on, check mail.
Oh BUGGA *ex*. Not what I wanted to see before breakfast.
Trevor did mention dropping the sump off a while back. Quite obvious now, big end gone, piston flung up to kiss valve. Just because oil returns to the tank it may not have been through the crank first. I'll now put money on a chocker block sludge trap.
Commiserations Brucie, but like I said at least it didn't stop with a bang.
Cheers

btw, any tiny powdery non-magnetic residues in the oil?

Hmm? Maybe just a little.

That’s a whole lot of shrapnel going on.

Not quite your neck of the woods but I always recommend Roger at Cake Street Classics over in Suffolk. Probly not the cheapest, but he’ll run a proper post mortem and fix everything along the way on a build. I think he does roller conversions on the timing side now as well.

Hi Guys,

Engine nearly out, just got to play around with a few bits and pieces and its off to the workshop. Spoke to my local vintage specialist today who said he would do the rebuild for me and would send anything required for re-grinding etc off to another specialist workshop he always uses and has trust in. Fair play I thought, this guys been in the business a lot of years and is well respected in the neighbourhood. However when I asked him if his specialist workshop would balance the crankshaft at the same time he said its not worth doing unless I planned to race the motor etc, in fact he said in 20 years of rebuilding A10's he has never balanced a crank yet. This surprised and worried me somewhat as I thought its always prevalent to get the crank balanced especially if its getting the full works done on it.  Is this not the case or am I wrong in my assumption?

I use a guy called Tony Hartland who used to own the rebore shop near Farnham but the best about for crank work (recommended by PM racing) are the Coventry reboring and metalling company very good and very reasonable priced from an engineering point of view

They did a crank of mine last year which needed a journal welded (due to a dropped rod) and 5 journals reground (yes it was british lol) and I think the total cost of that including postage worked about about £130. considering the damnge that had been done I was most impressed with the repair and the price.

I agree with Richard you have come this far why not save a lot of money and do the work yourself its only a bit of time and patience and maybe a bit of advice off this forum

just guessing here a bit Brucie but think your local guy is being fair, think discounting the racers we have the majority here will never have had a crank balanced and no need unless something has been done to upset the original balance (welding or such), probably the kindest thing you can do for a crank is clean the sludge trap.
All the best - Bill

I don't think anyone previously has concerned themselves with the balance on the crank, and she's a real peach. Let's face it everyone accepted the factory values back in the day.

I agree, a road bike doing legal speeds (autobahn excepted) on a rebuild to +60 would barely be noticeable to most riders. I do mine but I like to play in the traffic *eek*. So unless your putting in a different breed of rods and forged 10:1 pistons I wouldn't bother.

Cheers again guys for all your help, much appreciated.

Decided to give the crank balancing a miss, one for cost reasons and the other like you said cyclobutch & muskrat....would I ever noticed  the benefit the speed I tend to potter about nowadays.

hopefully I will finish off getting the motor out tonight and then its off to the engine doctors at the weekend.
