conversion to 12v
« on: 02.06. 2015 10:29 »
My A10 magneto is shot so I have gone the 12v, electronic ignition route (Thorspark, DVR2 and AGM battery).
Most of bits removed and at the point of installing new electronics. First issue is where to locate the coil! Installation info suggests under the tank but there doesn't seem to be enough room there. 2nd suggestion is under the seat but then the HT leads aren't long enough.

I think I saw photos a while ago of a coil in place but I have searched on the forum and can't find it now.

Has anyone done this conversion and have pictures or know where to get picture of coil in situ?
I am also going to upgrade the battery earth wire. Any suggestions for cable size?

Many thanks

In answer to your actual question, extend the HT leads.

My unsolicited advice is don't throw the mag away yet.

Fastened my coil to the large hole at the rear of the top frame rail (was a sidecar fastening point I believe)
the coil is fixed to a flexible alloy strip which is insulated with heat shrink (in the unlikely event it should foul a battery terminal), the alloy strip is fastened to the afore said frame hole with a single bolt arrangement such that it can be slackened a little and swung around to gain access to the battery.
not sure what is on for tomorow but if time allows I'll get a photo

Hi oldbeezageezer, could it be you where looking for this?;

The picture of the coil and how it is fixed is a bit unclear though, but I drilled two holes in the tank strap, and bolted the coil onto that

Thanks for the info guys. It's given me a couple of options to look at. I like the tank strap idea (thanks for the link Morris) and the wiring would fit in nicely with my plan to replace the steering lock with an ignition switch. If it will fit in the hole.

I am not doing away with the mag. I have bought a unit from sussex motorcycles that fit in place of the mag points set up.

Did any of you beef up the battery earth cable?

Do you know if there are any ignition switches that still has the steering lock part that will fit in the hole?

I don't know of any ignition/lock that will fit in the steering lock hole Johnny. My ignition switch is too small for the hole so looks like I am putting it in the headlamp nacelle.

I have also changed my mind about the coil location. I am now going for under the battery box. Bit more work involved and I will probably have to get a longer HT lead, but it hides it away nicely.
Checking locations and wiring diagrams I have found that the existing wiring connections leave a lot to be desired so more work checking and re doing them!

I don't remember having this hassle back when I were a lad terrorising the neighbourhood on my Super Rocket. Still both 50 years older so to be expected I suppose.
