Black Gloss Paint recommendations
« on: 22.06. 2015 11:43 »
Hi All,

Just wondering on any good recommendations for a Black Gloss paint in a spray can that's worth a try. I just have some old original plunger covers i'm trying to 'freshen up' and give a new lease of life to........

Three years ago I had the bike frame and other parts sand blasted and powder coated. I attempted to spray my machine tinware with Aerosols; started with things like fork and plunger shrouds. I then made the decision that aerosol paint is just not tough enough so got a local body shop to spray the rest of the tinware with two-pack auto paint; it was not cheap but I'm glad I did because the bike still gleams and if there is a small scratch or rub the paint responds well to cutting back and polishing. My home sprayed parts let down the look as they are chipped and  dull and need repainting.

To get a professional looking finish, with a two-pack lacquer top coat look no further than these people.

http://www.specialistpaints.com/products/base-canz

Bottom right is a black basecoat with two pack finish, click on it to enlarge. From that page go to this one.

http://www.specialistpaints.com/products/2k-clear-coat-canz

The two component parts are sealed from one another, you press a button to break the seal. After that it is just like an ordinary aerosol, but after about 12 hours it goes off in the can.
Easy to use, lays nicely and as you already know, tough and durable. There are also some primers on there too.

Excellent, thanks for all those suggestions, will definitely check them out. What I tried just doesn't look gloss at all, although layed on nice.

Try matting off with very fine/worn out wet and dry and polishing back.

Just be aware of that Hammerite is a Silicone based paint and can not be painted over with any other type of paint or lacquer.

Hi johnny are you sure the smooth Hammerite has silicon in it? I think I read on the net somewhere that the hammered version might ......but only to give the hammered effect but the basic paint is still solvent based, in New Zealand versions anyway.

I have had no problems painting over Hammerite smooth with other oil based paint and have used both the spray can and brush versions on two bikes now, with excellent results, but it really does run easily!

If it looks something like this one (Swedish smooth version) it says clearly in the product data sheet that it can not be painted over with any other paint, it is solvent based but contains silicon...

I think there are variations between markets! Here is a an extract from the Hammerite spec sheet but possibly the original poster has heard enough about hammerite *beer*

Yes that is exactly what is needed. I re-sprayed a headlamp shell using a Halfords rattle can. Give the paint time to harden before you do this. I then polished the shell with Halfords rubbing compound. The result was a deep shiny gloss black, and two years later it still looks like new. I sprayed several thin coats to allow for the cutting back and polishing process. As always don't try to hurry the job. Patience is the watch word. Believe me the result will be worth it.
