OK folks, the plugs were not to blame. Apologies to Champion. I cleaned the slip ring, cleaned/renewed the insides of the pick up contact surfaces, and lo and behold! Deep throaty roar. I guess there is a difference between different plugs' abilities to spark with a dirty mag. All is well in the sparking department.
