Road Directions UK ???
« on: 28.07. 2015 02:45 »
Hello All
After getting off the ferry coming back from the upcoming Manx GP,
I need to get my Golden Flash and sidecar across the country to Felixstowe to ship the outfit back to Australia.
Saturday night we are staying in Loughborough to take in the "Shackerstone Festival".
So I have roughly 100 miles on both Saturday and Sunday to cover.

Never ridden in the UK so do not know the lay of the land.
It seems to make sense to avoid the Motorways, or am I being overcautious?

Any ideas?

I would recommend Leicester ring road, then A47 to Peterborough, then short stretch on country lanes to Chatteris, then via Ely and Newmarket, then A14 to Felixtowe. No motorways.

Trucks here are limited to about 50 mph. To ride the motorways you really want to be able to cruise at least 55 to keep clear of them. So probably best avoided. A good tool for checking routes is:

(Though I'm sure others are available) Use of that I think is fairly self explanatory.

I live in Felixstowe and frequently plan my routes avoiding the A14 (boring and very motorway like).
I would head more cross country stick on the A47 (don’t know that road) to Wisbeach, then the A1101 to Downham Market, the A1122 to Stradsett, then down the A134 to Thetford, then the A1088 through Euston, Ixworth and Norton. You can then either join the A14 to Felixstowe (relatively short hop) or do back roads (can give more details if you want).

I try to avoid motorways or similar fast roads as my machine doesn't like to be pushed faster than about 60 mph and that is a bit too slow for the traffic. I imagine an A10 with a chair might be a bit slower.

Agreed, Even though I have only 2 days, I'd like to see a little more than Armco rushing past.
