raw fuel tank
« on: 25.09. 2015 12:09 »
Anyone know for certain if all the India made tanks are made by the same manufacturer?

My plan is to buy a raw steel tank, and have it plated here. I just want to be sure to buy the best tank to start with, plating is not going to be inexpensive so I want to start well.

 Any ideas?

No, Indian petrol tanks are not all made by the same manufacturer. As you are no doubt aware quality can vary considerably. This guy seems to have a good reputation go to this page to read what Norton owners are saying about his Commando steel fast back tanks http://www.nortonownersclub.org/noc-chat/technical4-commando-forum/710487718

This page is about raw steel A10 tanks:

 OK,

I just ordered a raw tank from this guy, 20-25 days out.

I got a hold of the chrome shop, after I sent a pic of the tank they said $350-$400 to chrome, could take up to 2 months. So without paint, I am looking at 600-650 bucks in total. The best part is I know the chrome will be good and not peel off inside 6 months.

I will take some pictures as I get things moving.

I just received the new raw tank from this seller. I think they make them when you order- I did not hear from the seller for 2_3 weeks, then an address question from him and three days later DHL dropped off the new tank.

So far, it seems well made. There is some kind of rust red coating inside the tank I wish was not there because I have no idea what it is. But other than that, threads are good and shape is nice.

It's probably going in for chrome on Monday, along with generator body for nickle. I know it should be cadmium- but good luck getting that done around here.

When I had my original tank replated I was very cross to get it back with a rusted interior when it was OK before. The platers took a long time over the job. I reckon they left it damp and forgot about it for a couple of weeks. I wimped out and didn't have a go at them. I decided to line the tank with POR15. You may need to do the same. That seems to be excellent stuff; if you get it onto somewhere it isn't supposed to be you have a problem, (Houston!).  I had to buy a thread tap to remove liner from the fuel tap bosses.

Any updates on the tank would be useful as I am considering getting one made for my longstroke A7. I think my bike is a '48 but the logbook says  '47 so I might go for the sort with the speedo hole if they can make it.
