Oil tank plug fibre washer availability
« on: 07.10. 2015 19:56 »
Simple one this (I hope)
Since first running-in oil change I have had a weep from the big chrome hexagonal plug at the base of the oil tank on my RGS (ahem, replica). Tightening makes it worse so have ceased tightening.
I see that Draganfly etc stock these, but hardly economical to lash out chunky postage on a 20 pence washer - does anyone know exactly what size these fibre washers are and whether they are readily available in packs on eBay etc?
Surprising how much oil can drain through the flamin' thing on the prop stand.

I use a 27x32x2mm metric size solid copper washer which I anneal at each oil change.
Works great for me. Not a single drop.

Brilliant! Have ordered pack of five of the top lot at £1.99 or something as daft as that. But I note that the second type, which doesn't need annealing, are priced at £199 if you go to the correct size. And the one on the opening page is £144. Someone (or some algorithm) is clearly confusing decimal points, so I'm certainly not clicking buy it now in case I end up paying the quoted price for a small ring of copper.
Firstly, is weeping from the oil tank a common problem, and do most owners use the standard fibre washer? Or is it not standard and should they be copper?
Secondly, it's a long time since I donned blue overalls in metalwork at school and annealed a copper ash tray. How does one anneal a copper ring? Is it just a case of warming it up a lot and bunging it in cold water with a hiss, whoosh of steam and stench of hot metal?

More haste less speed. Just realised that the price quoted for the second non-anneal type is for 1,000 units and you can click down for five, or even one, which I have just done. Doh.

Yep they're the ones. To anneal, I heat them red hot and quench them in water.

The crushables might also work, but these can not be annealed/reused.
