Why does my ski slope not fit???
« on: 20.10. 2015 10:18 »
Hi All, playing with bits of my A10 (1961 SR), I have been doing a dry run assembly prior to paint  to show up any snags/damage etc .
On offering up the "ski slope" gearbox cover to the rear engine/gearbox mounts, I find that its way too tall for the hook at the top edge to engage with the battery tray slot(assuming that it is meant to?). In its lowest position, the hook is about 1/4-3/8" too high and the shoulders on  the sides of the ski slope will not go under the front edge of the battery tray to allow the hook anywhere near the slot in the tray.If I undo the battery tray bolts, and tilt the battery tray up at the front at a silly angle, it just about engages, but no use like that.

I have read about battery tray brackets being higher on "true" RGS frames, and this puzzles me- why would battery brackets placed higher (which would alleviate my ski slope fit problem) be necessary for a RGS?
Looking at the parts lists, all models have the same ski slope as far as I can tell (42-4272) I know that the battery changed from PU7E (6&3/8" tall) to ML9ZE (5&1/4" tall) in about 1960-61? So possibly BSA wanted to lift the new smaller battery up by moving the battery tray brackets up a little??, but this would have applied to all late models, not just the RGS- perhaps if this is the case its just one way of identifying an RGS frame as , by definition they were all late frames thus an "RGS" with the lower brackets "must" be a fake.... My `61 frame has the lower brackets close (1/4-5/16") to the cross tube of the frame, but has the smaller battery...... Was it the cross tube that was lowered?, and not the battery brackets lifted on the frames with a bigger gap?

Anyone any ideas?  Why does my ski slope not fit??

Thinking about all this, having the battery tray brackets higher, will lift the front oil tank mount also...... but i cannot find anything to suggest that the small oil tank bracket (42-8351) was ever changed , or the oil tank.....

Any ideas........ Cheers, Bob C.

Bob,
The tube is in a different place, not the brackets. The RGS frame has the tube in the same place as the 1954/5 frame.
Is your ski slope a genuine or pattern part?

Thanks Trev, If it was the tube that was moved that would make sense-i.e. no part numbers (apart from the frame part no.itself) ever changed as no need to, but then all ski slopes should fit....... I assume mine is a genuine one, its  an autojumble sourced one to replace my original which is rotted through with battery acid, but it is very ,very close to the same shape, and seems pukka.

Interestingly, i have just spotted a NOS one on Fleabay, from Triumphtwinspares, which is definately shaped differently at the front end, deeper overhang, and it does not seem to have a hook at the top end, although it could just be the picture angle obscuring the hook.
I can see its going to be a "file to fit job" but it seems a shame to as my autojumble one is a real beauty, survived in mint condition so far!

Forgive my ignorance , but what was the reason BSA moved the frame tube?

Cheers, Bob C

Hi Bob. I've been reading about your problem with interest as I have the same problem but in reverse!! my slope hardly reaches down enough to be retained by the bolt in fact I've had to use larger washers to keep it secured. I'm away at the moment but perhaps we should compare dimensions when I get back. Perhaps I have a slope that would suit your needs and you mine. I'm at a loss as to why this is a problem but it would be nice to sort it. Regards, Peter

A picture may be helpful. I had a hard time fitting mine as well. Then for no apparent reason (must have been holding my mouth just right) it went in nicely.

Hi All. I have finally got around to sorting out a photo showing the issue. The photo actually shows a ski slope from another of my bikes, I've switched the slope and the battery carrier from 2 other bikes but the poor fit is always the same. It looks too untidy for me to live with!  Has anyone any ideas? Please.  Regards, Peter

Looks like the battery base bracket is the wrong way round.

Man - I didn't know they weren't symetrical - grrr.  I had this same problem and ended up 'making' the slope fit.  Next time I'm stripping bit's off I'll look at turning the tray and replacing the slope - but not just now as have spent too long fitting all the rest of the parts round about it!  Come to think of it - it might be a pain cause I fitted my solid state reg to the bottom of the tray.
However - that would explain why the air filter (pancake) is so close to the battery!
Good spot Billy.

Hi Billy. Thanks for your suggestion however I don't think its possible to fit the tray back to front due to the angled mounting brackets and the inclined tube that it attaches to, also, on the really late bikes with this style of battery carrier the air filter, when fitted, attaches to the vertical plate which is at the front. Any other suggestions?
Best Regards, Peter

PS. I would still like to hear from 1660Bob who had the opposite problem and started this thread. Cheers
