making list for powder coating
« on: 23.10. 2015 11:17 »
While other things are in motion, and out of my hands I thought I would look at getting the frame powder coated.

I have heard the stories of rust under powder, and I dont have the concern. The frame is in excellent structural condition, there is no rust issue now and probably never will have while I am taking care of the bike. I know it maybe, possibly, could get sprinkled on by a lawn sprinkler, it will never be driven at night, and will certainly be looked after.

So that should take care of that concern.

Now most know this bike was bought as an incomplete basket, it was to go under the chop saw and be chopperized but never got that far. But a lot of pieces were lost over the years.

I am making a list to go to powder coating, and I am afraid I will miss something- either because I just forget it or I dont have it and have not missed it yet.

So here is my current list
frame
swingarm
tripletree clamps
battery holder
drivers footpegs and rod
center stand
side stand
4 engine/gearbox mounting plates
lower fork legs and clamps
rear brake lever

can anyone think of anything I am missing?

 Thanks,

Chain guard ( if not chrome plated ).
“4 engine/gearbox mounting plates”: I have them chromed…
Brake drums, if not Arial hubs
Steering Top and bottom yokes
Read mudguard stayes (if swinging arm)
Rear mudguard stay brackets ( if not in stainless )
Lifting handle ( if not chromed )
Brake pedal (rear brake)
Numberplate(holder & rear light holder)

tripletree clamps

Be careful with these, you must mask off or make it impossible to get powder coat on the surfaces that engages the forks, particularly the top tapered ones.
A friend of mine didn't and had a very difficult time removing  powder coat from the taper.

I have since found by accident that a very good remover of powder coat is gasket remover, do be careful, it is that good

What's happening around the headlight?

Fork shrouds
Headlight shell
Any alternative headlight mountings

Toolbox
Oil Tank
Oil tank front mount bracket
or maybe you're painting those.

Dual seat brackets?  Depends what you're doing there.

Rear shock covers, if you want a matching finish.

Front engine plates (2)

Dynamo end cover, depending on type

Any horn parts or bracket?

Dual clock mounting plate, if you have that arrangement.
Clock mounting brackets, if you don't have the nacelle.

I think I would prefer to do a dummy build, to ensure completeness and fit. And, echoing a previous post, to see what must not be coated.

I am yet to have anything powder coated but my thinking is that it shouldn't go on tins (includimg chain guard, and tanks). Sometimes they need pounding and almost always have body filler.

Lee a couple of things to ask your powder coater to make sure he is doing it correctly.

He should get the frame blasted to bare metal and then give it a powdercoat zinc based undercoat, then the colour goes over that. You need to tell him what needs to be left uncoated, like the places the head stem bearings go that way he can wipe the powder out of them before he bakes it. That goes for any part you dont want coated like inside the triple clamps.

The powder is sprayed on and its easy to wipe it off any unwanted areas before its baked.

Before you take the frame to him make sure it is clean from grease and oil and there are no rubber components on it anywhere.

If possible take it to a powdercoater that is familiar with motorcycle parts, he will have a better idea of what to do.

Also if you are getting it done black ask him what black he uses, there are lots of different blacks. We use a brand called Interpon and the colour is "Coral Black Gloss", it is a very deep jet black.

Dont worry if you miss a few parts, powdercoating is not like spray painting that is better done in batches. If you get some done and find you have some more parts just take them to him and they will come back the same as your first lot.
