Another noise question -A7SS

Hi,
A 1/4 in. 

Which type clutch is fitted ? 4 or 6 spring
If a four spring type, possibilities include the incorrect shaft adaptor from a single cylinder B series model
or worn /split adaptor on the 6 spring
Incorrect crank spacer or cush drive sleeve will also cause issues

 Thanks for the reply. Since then I made a small discovery the crank spacer had been put on the wrong way round by some idiot(that will be me) and the right way round reduced the gap quite a lot. It clutch still fits a little forward. Its a four spring so I will trawl through your post on how the check the differences on the adaptor. If all the bits are correct where do I go from then??. Also I still have to sort out the pesky sideplay. I only wanted to ride it. All the years (26) I have owned this bike this is the most trouble I have ever had

That would mean that the bearing and shims were not "clamped" together

While stripping down checked the clutch alignment and its fine now after I put the spacer the right way round duh

A useful tip;
Create a folder in your browser's bookmark section and rename it "A7-A10 interesting posts" or something.
Bookmark the posts that you want to find again later and drag the bookmark into the folder you created. If you want you can rename them to something that makes more sense to you, or just leave the title as is.

Right update....Got the engine out and split. As before no shim damage so I will order some extra shims and use the largest etc to reduce shim stack. Bearing locking compound failed so extra deep metal clean and try again. Other findings one engine rear mounting bolt stripped thread and other nut rounded so both to be replaced. Oil seal damaged on removal so replace as well. As a side question what can you use to remove excess wellseal from the engine casing??

Warm it up then use wire wool dipped in metholated spirits or petrol.
Nail varnish remover, ( acetone) seems to be a good solvent although I haven't tried it.

Acetone worked a treat and free as where I work uses it.

Starting to put her together now. As an aside Andrew at Priorymagneto's supplied the required bits quickly and at a good price. Started shimming and so far down to 3 thou but I want it perhaps 1.5 thou as you can still feel  movement at 3 and I don't like that. Also using the sleeve etc to push all the bearings/shims in to get a more accurate measure. This bit always takes ages not helped by a stripped crankcase stud(thanks again Andrew for sorting me one out).

Well she's back on the road. The 'noise' has gone to be replaced with the normal noises and vibrations. I think come winter I will look into a crank balance as she still vibrates quite alot.
