If you were in the U.S. you could register it by the engine number (in most states) and that would be the end of it.

Have you seen the DVLA site for information on registering a reconstructed classic vehicle? I dont think there is any leeway in the process.

Unless you can find the frame number you would need to evidence the age of the frame to their satisfaction.

If they accept the evidence they would issue a new vin  number to be stamped on the frame which would commence DVLASWA397 (and followed by 7 other numbers).

Easier if you find the frame number.

I don't think I can see in your original message but what version frame are do you have? ie rigid, plunger or swinging arm?

There are ways round this issue.

Paul.

Hi Dave,
Is it an early or late type frame?
Late frames have a full height wrap round on the headstock, earlier have a half height
The number is stamped onto the full height wrap round on the left hand side,
If the wrapround was removed the number is gone??
earlier number is on the front of the headstock

The DVLA are not that fanatical about this but as I assume it has no number plate the BSA owners club need to send you a letter confirming the age of the machine.

Shames its already powder coated if it was not I would just stamp a number on the damned thing

The DVLA have changed a few things since I lived there and looked into it.

'It is a true reflection of the marque'
'Is comprised of genuine period components all over 25 years old'
'Your vehicle won’t get an age-related registration number if it includes new or replica parts'

I guess they're trying to make it more difficult for the tax exemption!

Be prepared for an inspector to come have a look at it and show the receipts.

In my experience that's not a problem, but lack of a clear, contemporary non-molested frame number certainly will be.

The inspector that DVLA send won't be an expert on whether the tail light bulb is year-correct, but he will need to see a (for all intents and purposes) genuine frame number. It all hinges on that.
