actual combat took place over the Medway the german pilot ,Ernist Hempel got out but died of exposure while in the water, the english pilot , George Bennion ,died shortly after during another sortie .
2 brothers watched the fight ,the 109 landed mostly intact on a mudbank, 27 yrs later they found the propellor and another group salvaged the tail,both on display in hawkinge museum.
