My youngest son gave me a 1" to 2" Moore & Wright micrometer for my birthday, (care of my Amazon Wish List).Now when I need to I'll be able to measure my crank journals accurately; yay!

Not a toy but proper one, most impressed same make as my apprenticeship 0 to 1" purchaed over 50 yrs ago and still going strong.
We always used to keep a ball bearing in the case as a gauge.

I'm pleased to hear that M&W are still considered to be proper. You never know what's happened with some of the famous names these days; Hepolite for instance!

I have a 0.5" M&W and a 1" Swiss Etalon with carbide tips and a vernier scale on the sleeve that I've had since the last century.

Have you noticed when buying Hepolite pistons that the dirty marks and fingerprints on the box are printed on. Probably to infer that it's new "old stock" .

Well my wife worked for Hepolite for 8yrs in the 70s and her brother was a draughtsman for 40+years and her son still works there making gudgeon pins by the thousand,  although years ago were bought out by A.E.GOETZE Piston Products Ltd from 1990 until 1994 then became A.E.GOETZE Automotive Lt 1994 TO 1999 then they were bought by an American company Federal Mogul ltd and still is today !

Barely relevant, but in my previous job I worked for a qualifications company specialising in construction - almost all the woodworking centres I visited ran Wadkin machinery from 1930's - they absolutely swore by it, said better machinery has yet to be made.

I believe it's preferrable if your micrometers are Moore Wright than wrong.

Picked up a BSA mike some years ago 1" in it's original box , often wonder how accurate it is after all those years, must get it tested someday, however I would reckon it's more accurate then my eye and an Aldi digital calliper (which is fine for just about everything I do )

Ok here's the ones I used to measure my crank the other day.  have to admit did prefer using the Mitutoyo digi mic cos I'm lazy
