Magneto Parts
« on: 23.02. 2018 09:03 »
Hi

The points retaining steel spring arm is cracked on my mag.

Do I have to replace the whole plate (looks like part no. 492854) or can a new steel spring arm be cunningly fitted to the brass pillar?

Doesn't look like something I can do.

Regards

Pat

^^that^^ is a bumper sticker *smile*...I think you should be able to change that if it's the one I'm thinking of- others will hopefully confirm that

maybe 'duTch Courage' - was Coopers anyway....I was being encouraging, I was thinking if Pat means the points return spring it involves removing the centre screw and taking the points plate out, replace the spring and reinstall plate easy-peasy.

However, if Pat means the ~1" long flat spring on the post to points-pivot post, that's diffo....mine broke about 4-5 years ago, and although not ideal everything works fine- although on reflection, for some reason a winding did burn out last year but I wouldn't have thought the lack of retainer spring would have been the cause, and I'm not sure if the spring was replaced by the guy who renovated it then. If not I guess it doen't matter, but still not ideal (keeps dust out if nothing else other than hold points in alignment)

Hi Dutch,

It is the latter. It hasn't snapped off completely, but isn't doing anything as there is a gap between it and the shoulder of the points.

The points seem to stay where they are (not sure why!). Just if it was any easy fix, then might as well do it.

Regards

As I thought, and seems it will inevitably snap off, which may interfere with running  *eek*...probably better not there at all, and maybe an easy fix with the right gear....(*note to self*)
There's been discussion about this before, have a search, or one of the Guru's may offer better help

Hi

492854 looks like it is for the whole plate.

I was just interested in the steel spring strip from brass pillar to points i.e. the bit that holds the shoulder of the points in place.

Looks like a little brass rivet is punched in.

Regards

Pat

Pat, the clip was available but I don't know if it still is.
I have replaced a few with parts sourced locally but I think that they originally came from Stewart Towner in England.
Easy job to do.
