Newcomer from Seattle
« on: 20.09. 2018 22:21 »
Greetings. I’m new to British bikes, but I’m up to the challenge of assembling six boxes of A10 bits into a roadworthy machine. The bike was taken down to small parts in 1965, and hasn’t been worked on since, so it’s quite a puzzle to me, the un-initiated. I am a retired machine tool mechanic, and plied my trade at Boeing for 38 years, so bending wrenches is what I do for enjoyment. So far, everything about my Golden Flash has been well designed and machined to a very high standard, and has survived 50 odd years of vermin abuse while stored away.
Anyway, it will good to talk to you all in future, I expect many long nights in my shop during our coming rainy season. It is Seattle after all.

Hi all, great hearing from you all. When I figure out how to post pics, I’ll get on it, but what I bought was six boxes of ‘54 Golden Flash, a rolling frame, and a clear WA title. What lube that was on the bits in 1965 morphed into a cosmoline like coating and protected the parts from rust, but things like the spark advance needed penetrating oil to free up. The body parts for the GF are long gone, so it may take on a unique, but tasteful look based on a Road Rocket.

Hi Whipstrut

A few years ago I very nearly purchased a big beautiful old Axelson 20"swing? metal lathe from the Seattle Boeing plant.
The only problem was shipping. There was only one shipping company authorized to go into the Boeing works for pickup and they wanted $5,000 just to get the lathe out of the yard.
Did you ever get to operate that Axelson, by chance?
Supposed to be one of the best built US lathes from the Golden era.

Glen

I remember those machines, but my trade only worked NC machines, which at Boeing was a really big deal. Did you realize that we produce nearly 50 737’s per month? If you think that an early A10 is a bit of a puzzle, you should experience an early NC machine from Sundstrand or Warner and Swasey.

G'day Whipstrut.  *welcome*
A 54 GF would be the 1st of the swing arms. Most parts can be mixed and matched.
We have another member in Seattle, RGS-Bill.

Welcome  Whipstrut.
I'm a fellow Gold Flash owner (two at the moment)
lots of knowledge and help here, so ask away and keep us informed of your progress.

Watched a TV programme around Boeing and others last week, going back to their efforts during WW2, impressive the number of bombers they turned out
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco
