59 BSA super rocket, Oregon USA, $7500 ONO???
« on: 31.08. 2019 02:11 »
I am posting this on behalf of a local guy, I will be over there tomorrow looking at a Ariel Red Hunter project, (Clearly I am touched in the head) But if anyone wants a FPI (First Person Inspection) I am happy to help.
I have spoken to him at length and seems to be an honest upstanding sort, and cheerfully I like to help folks like him as he is a bit of a unicorn.  20 Something (spare the hipster/millenial jokes) But is passionate about vintage vehicles and a bit of a sucker/Glutton for punishment is he saw British flags at a local shop, Inquired and is now employed at a local Sports car repair shop.

So, I happily encourage such madness, next generation etc etc..
Anyrate, His BSA is here.  He is admittedly depressed as very little local interest so I am here to facilitate/enable.

So he is second owner???

" All original paint and patina. New valves, guides, pistons, rings, clutch, and a lot more. Purchased new in Bellingham Washington. Call for more info."

Advert is here: https://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/mcy/d/portland-1959-bsa-super-rocket/6948619617.html

He also  has a very sweet Matchless rigid frame flat tracker with alleged PNW race history..  This one *ahem* is one very attractive machine, Not sure about the price,, be hard to build one at that price and certainly rare however Matchless folks are a strange lot.

First kick, flat tracker, 500cc
Very clean bike
Washington title
Price drop- need gone

He might also be parting with a 48 Triumph Chopper.  I will be happy to report after my visit over there tomorrow.   *smile* *eek* *dunno*

I went and looked at this bike, Not specifically as he had something else I was interested in.  The bike is much nicer than it appears, and he is selling himself short on how its advertised and I told him so.  He admits he overpaid for it when purchasing, So cant drop the price much without a severe loss, But its really in nice condition, history and a recent service along with a lot of spare parts.

He DID sell the Matchless though.  Again, I have no financial interest here, But it is local and the seller is a decent guy.

Good to see. At the rate the pound is sinking against the dollar, importing anything from over the pond is becoming increasingly prohibitive. Except for chlorinated chicken of course.

yes agreed, there is a variety of factors  that are impacting vintage collector vehicles.  Canada is not doing so hot either in currency exchange and reading stories about tariffs and trade wars is not helping either. **
Although, not to make this political, But the trade imbalance with China and the US addiction to cheap goods from overseas overall is well overdue for a course correction.

My Dad was a WW2 veteran and most of his friends hated the Japanese, and well into the 1970s Dad and many others refused to purchase anything with made in Japan.  That changed, But I often think the world has gone mad and hard to see where things will lead.

Maybe soon, petrol based engines will be outlawed altogether, and the RUSH song "The Red Barchetta" is actually prophetic.

"My uncle has a country place
That no one knows about
He says it used to be a farm
Before the Motor Law
And on Sundays I elude the eyes
And hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire
Where my white-haired uncle waits
Jump to the ground
As the Turbo slows to cross the borderline
Run like the wind
As excitement shivers up and down my spine
Down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me an old machine
For fifty odd years
To keep it as new has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
I fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge...
Well-weathered leather
Hot metal…
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware
Suddenly ahead of me
Across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air car
Shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires
To run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley
As another joins the chase
Drive like the wind
Straining the limits of machine and man
Laughing out loud with fear and hope
I've got a desperate plan
At the one-lane bridge
I leave the giants stranded at the riverside
Race back to the farm
To dream with my uncle at the fireside.

** Insert a Goldstar, Bonnie or a RGS and a little Castrol oil...

Love that!

I've just listened to the song on YouTube. Great!
