Self introduction Barry Wilson
« on: 06.10. 2020 22:14 »
Hi Guys, thanks for accepting me. An exciting day today as I picked up a totally dismantled Golden Flash, 1954 (?) swinging arm.  Many big bits missing, tank, head, mudguards, seat etc.  No log book as yet !  the guy says he might find it.  I look forward to sorting the boxes and can see some bits duplicated.  I am a real oldie and used to race a BSA A75 Rob North. I built the first Rocket Goldstar with an end fed crank in 1984 ( in Classic Bike) SRM use my design today.

I hope to restore the bike and restore excess parts to swap or sell to get whats missing.

G'day MrShifta  *welcome*
I doubt the GF will be as exciting as the RN A75 but you'll do a lot more miles in comfort.

How does Steve Mcfarlane fit into that story?

Or indeed the racing department at B.S.A. and Les Mason who started and owned Devimead which later became S.R.M?  *eek*

Are we all going to learn something new here?

Hi Guys, thanks for accepting me
In case it needs some clear up, the waiting time from registering to confirmation is only there to allow moderators (when online, not 24\7) to check ip\email\whatever for signs of some spam\hack attempt. Letting such things in can rapidly create havoc, lots of headaches cleaning up.

There is of course zero personal scrutinizing or opinionmaking about any new member before account activation (acceptance), we just make 101% sure the ip\email is originating from a real person \ does not appear in any spam\hack database.

Forum doors open and always welcoming anyone & everyone with a legit email and ip address ...with hopefully some interest in the early A's ;O)

I am confused (nothing unusual there). What's the connection between an end-fed crank and an electric start conversion?

Devimead was started by ex B.S.A. employee Les Mason who retired earl eighties.

Steve R. McFarlane (hence S.R.M.)bought Devimead and did engineering work including crank end feed conversions.

He got fed up, and sold it to the current owners with a clause he wouldn't go into competition with them for x amount of years.

After that time period, he set up again and amongst other things he perfected and sold the electric starts.

Wow, I didn't expect that sort of response, thanks for making me feel welcome, I don't claim to be the first to convert an A10 to end fed crank, however I designed mine so thet it cannot be seen and does not alter the appearance of the engine. Previously odd ones were tried with piping ouside the engine.  I showed the RGS at Belle Vue Classic bike show in 1984 and Classic Bike asked for an article which appeared in the March issue with my bike on the cover.  I made it clear that I did not want to do another and was happy for SRM to use my design.

Back to my Golden Flash, I am dissapointed to find that the engine that came in the boxes is for the Plunger frame whereas mine is a swinging arm. I only have crankcases/crank/conrods/pistons and barrel so I will sort it out and start looking for S/A engine parts or even an complete engine ?  I also have a plunger gearbox which I will strip eventually.

Its early to buy/sell stuff yet and all this is probably in the wrong place on the forum,  See you all soon.  Barry
