Introduction and a start of a dream build!

Good evening all!

Thought id introduce myself, My names Luke and together with my father we own a number of BSA's. I did used to be on here many years ago but thought id start fresh with a new build thread of my café racer build!

I have been collecting the parts for the build for a number of years but I finally decided to start the build whilst in lockdown and at the moment its full systems go!

The build is based on a 1960 BSA A10SR and will be built into a period cafe racer. Its not going to be a RGS replica, I have nothing against them but want the build to be in the ethos of building a cafe racer in the 60's with upgrades to improve the riding experience!

The spec -

1960 BSA A10 SR Frame - converted to run rear sets, clubman brake lever, solid type swinging arm bolt and de bracketed if not needed
1960 BSA SR cases, Large Journal crank ( Balanced), Thick lip barrels, needle roller conversion, RGS head with 9:1 pistons. I am nearly finished sorting all the parts out for this and will be built by Malcs Motorbikes in Waltham Cross.
STD Gearbox ( For know)
Taylor Dow Supperlegra top yoke, dampers and progressive springs and the longer length fork bushes
Suzuki GT750- 4LS front brake with fast road shoes with Flanged rim
Conical Rear hub with Flanged rim
Lyta Tank and Single seat
Alloy Mudguards
Swept Back pipes

Above photos are the beginning of the dry build, when I am happy everything fits and works well it will be stripped down ready for paint!!

Frame was taken to a Good friend of ours for the modifications, Rear sets welded on, clubman's brake pedal conversion, solid swinging arm bolt and general tidy up!

Thank you all for your kind words!

I currently have a lot of the parts at Malcs Motorbikes being shot blasted ready for priming, I fell foul on a project a few years ago not cleaning the parts off properly and the paint didn't adhere properly and I had to start again hence I've decided to blast everything!

I will also be looking into a 12v conversion, looking at the possible options at the moment!

Splendid!  Are you quite convinced about the roller bearing conversion? Not every tale I have heard of these has had a happy ending.

Hi Lucky,
Good to hear from You  *smile*

I noticed that one of the brackets that take the battery mounting is missing from the frame (LH) and someone has
added (welded on) a tab to the RH bracket to take the oil tank bottom mounting
Unfortunately the tab will not accept the cup for the rubber mounting widget
The tank needs to have the rubber mountings or it will crack
With the clubmans brake pedal  the cable anchor on the RH side is no longer required

A man with a plan.  *yeah* With as mcuh customization as you have in mind, why keep the pillion loops? Are they required to support the pipes you have in mind?

Thank you all for your kind words, progress continued today!

After reading through the replies, Chatterlea noticed the battery tray brackets were missing, well one of them was and the other was nothing but a bodge! Not sure how I missed it but thank you as youve save me a costly repair as I'd missed it, so thank you :)

Today I have removed the bodged up one and made two brand new brackets ready for welding tomorrow, I have also had a good rummage through the spares box and found a spare oil tank mount and trial fitted it all whilst taped up, I have also removed the brake cable mount!

 Onwards and upwards!

Hello all, bit of an update! I have been trying to reply on my phone however the photos wouldn't upload!

The frame brackets are made, welded and ready to go, I have also stripped it ready for paint!

Still waiting for my parts from the shot blasters then I can really get the build moving forward!

I have also picked up the seat I will be using, last big component to source is an alloy rear mudguard!

Looks like a plan coming together. Regarding uploading photos off your phone. I use an app to resize the image first. If it’s too big it won’t upload.
