Some sort of flux capacitor to help the jump into light speed!!  Someone will know and post in a minute. Suspect it either some sort of regulator for the dynamo (are there yellow and green wires entering from the back?) or part of an electronic ignition set up?

you are looking at one of two things, the first one is if set up correctly there is no need to convert to a solid state voltage regulator , the second is if it has been abused by some people bending parts to try and make it work then you may well have a nightmare trying to set it up. basically it controls and cuts out charging of the battery

Pic, whole system, out of the bike, for adjusting and fun.

Judging by the condition, it's a Wassell Lucas CVC (compensated voltage control) unit. Original Lucas ones are fine, new Lucas ones can be less so. I would replace it with a solid state one. Priory Magnetos would be the place to look.

That is a voltage regulator if it is an original and is working OK  then leave it alone but if it is a pattern one then in my experience of them they work for a while but then they start to have problems ie the points do not close and so do not charge the battery you can close them manually but it is a hassle every time yuu start the bike. My advice would be to buy a  DVR2 electronic one, they are easy to install and come with full instructions you get them from Dynamo Regulators Ltd, Fit and forget they come highly recommended I have fitted them on a couple of bikes and have given no problem for a number of years

That’s brilliant - thanks people, after you’ve told me what it is and then going back armed with my new knowledge it is currently in a non-functional state.

I’m learning to look at something, take a picture, think about it, search the forums to see if anybody has posted about it before, think about it and return to it to take a look - then if necessary post the question asking for help from the wealth of knowledge available here. BSA ownership I’m finding is very enlightening, interesting and more of an experience than “just riding” - superb

Djjames. I was in the same boat as you. I was at first cautious about doing anything on my a10, A: because I wasn’t sure what I was looking at B: because I didn’t know what I was doing and C: didn’t want to damage anything. Once you get stuck into these bikes there not so daunting after all. Like you say research and help and advice and you’ll be well on your way. I’ve managed a full engine rebuild now after the cam and followers got chewed. I’ve just rebuilt a spare gearbox I bought too. Hopefully I’ll get round at rebuilding the forks over winter. Just got to get stuck in and give it a go. Wishing you well. Enjoy

G'day DD
+2 for the DVR2. Easy to convert to 12v if you want or leave it as 6v. It will fit in the old reg box. Both mine have them. In 30 years only blew up one (my fault).

Plus 2 for the DVR2.

Same as Musky, mine's had one for years and the only failure was my fault.

Bad earth wire, and they really don't like that!

+1 more for the DVR2. Not to be confused with the very inferior VReg2 thing.
