Fuel leaking through the tank badge
« on: 21.03. 2021 14:34 »
Any experience with a fuel tank leak through the badge mounting screws? The tank isn't in too bad a condition but after filling up I've noticed the leak. I don't know if its coming from the end or the weld. I'm currently thinking whether to fit a modern good quality liner or try and seal it from inside the badge mounting screw. Thanks for any suggestions

G'day Taylor.
I had similar many years ago with a 51 A7 tank. One of the holes was stripped and in my failed repair it started leaking. I had to line the tank with Por15. It's final resting position to dry was with that part down to give extra thickness over that spot.

If like me you hate 'liners', use silver solder or braze to fill the screw hole and re-tap the thread.

You'd do well to get an effective solder "fill" of a blind hole, and then you'd do well to accurately redrill the hole for retapping.
And then the tank would need repainting too.. *conf*

No biggie, done it a few times, with silver solder. Pretty easy really.
Perhaps I've been lucky.

Maybe fill the hole with jb weld epoxy filler and retap it I’ve not tried anything like that but its worth a go if you have some jbweld in the shed. Its quite liquid and would sink and fill gaps. Alternatively dont tap it and use a good double sided tape for 5he badges, and glue dummy screw heads on as well.

This is what I plan to do as a first attempt as the rest of the tank is reasonable. Current thought is to then shorten the screw and reuse.

+1 with you Muskrat on POR 15.
I treated many tanks with it and never had any problems, from friable flat tanks to TIG pinholed new ones.
Make sure you get the tank sealer version, they have a paint as well and it does not work.
Dont leave a pool anywhere inside because the pool bubbles up when drying
