Lockdown project finished.
« on: 05.04. 2021 10:22 »
Thanks for all the advise along the way.
My ‘57 Plunger is now complete and running.
After 40+ years in a leaky shed totally disassembled it now something I’m proud of.
A chance meeting with an old school friend led to my purchase from his wife’s cousin.
Although I have all the original tinware restored and painted I decided to build the bike similar in style the GS I had back in the 60’s.
Using stainless steel where practical, rims, spokes, mudguards and brackets I hope to extend its life and attractive appearance.
It starts fairly easily with a points driven electronic ignition, but takes effort to kick over with a 9:1 CR.
This forum has been a great help in resolving the problems I encountered along the way and providing inspiration, so thanks again.
Steve.

very nice steve,
is that an indian petrol tank? the chrome is like new.
i found with 9 1 pistons the clutch slipped on the kickstart all too easy. flat tops no problem.

Very nice! I've been tempted to put the "blade" fenders on my SR, but having the originals in good shape with all matching paint and the nacelle style headlight stops me.

Hi, thanks for the replies and observations.
The mudguards are new stainless from e-bay. The front was £20 for 3, so have 2 spares.
The rears were £20 for 2 and I used both as they were short.
I know I’m a cheapskate but having seen the asking prices for chrome mudguards 10 times as much I’m happy with these stainless items.

Hi Ed, I hope your project is progressing well.
My tank is the original and although much of the bike was taken apart and rusted up, the tank had a good coating of black Dulux emulsion. It looked horrible but much to my surprise and delight it stripped off nicely and when I used an aluminium scouring pad I found in the kitchen the remaining surface rust disappeared. The side chrome was good quality but the top had been chromed with slightly less prior polishing so is a bit duller but I’m happy enough with it.

So far my kickstart is not slipping. I found a clutch cover on e-bay and fitted it. With minimal primary oil I’m hoping the plates remain dry.
I’ve not over adjusted the clutch so the lever force is light at present, but with some miles covered I might have to look again.
In hindsight I should have gone for flat top pistons, but again these were cheap and got me up and running. If I find I need to re-bore the standard bores I’ll go the flat-top route.

Thank you all again,
Steve.

The petrol tank was probably painted with just the side chrome exposed, like my bike. So, only the sides got a really good polishing before the tank was chromed.
