You will find that you get a better swing on the kickstart if the cotter pin is fitted from the rear, this will move the lever to a more vertical position..
The rear brake has also been converted to rod operation which looks a neat job

Thank you for the complements, she certainly caught my eye. The Engine and Frame numbers denote 59 Flash but has been rebuilt with a thick flange barrel and the alloy twin port head. The compression is standard 7.5:1 as far as I know and only single carb but that is probably a bonus. I was told the original 'new' tank from India started to corrode but possibly was accident damaged. This one was new old stock I believe from the US and cost a lot of money.
Good tip on the kick start. I am thinking I have the wrong lever as if I position the exhaust to the outside of the pillion foot rest bracket it will strike the silencer, about half an inch interference unfortunately. If anyone knows where I might find the correct lever I would be grateful, or if anyone needs the one I have maybe we can swap? I thought about warming it up and reshaping it but will ruin the chrome...
The brakes are interesting to say the least! Yes the rear has a rod in an effort to improve the action but I don't think the cable was the issue. I found the freshly relined brake shoes were sitting miles away from the drum which has been remachined. I have made up a sleeve to add 4mm to the pivot and a new larger end cap to retain the shoes at the pivot end. I've also made new thicker brake shoe wear plates and now the action is much improved. I hope now the brake will start to do some work as the shoes bed in and I can adjust it up. I'm less than impressed with the front one too but at least it does pull up....eventually. I will take this apart and see how well the new linings are bedding in, maybe they need some help.
