I like Blue Hylomar. If it's good enough for Rolls Royce it's good enough for me. I never spread it on thick like peanut butter though. A smear is enough.

Well Done Gavin.
I use Blue Hylomar but more carefully these days. After my rebuild and the first running-in ride, I removed the sump and was surprised to find a few small lumps of Hylomar on the screen, despite being extremely sparing in the application. No matter how thinly it is applied, any excess will find it's way into the oil system. Unless the surface is perfect, I look for something a little harder setting.

I believe I’ve heard that excess anaerobic sealant which is squeezed out does not set and disappears into the engine oil.

Given that regretably for 4 months the engine never so much as got warm before the tank had emptied iself into the sump on its rare start ups, as I vairiously waited for new rings, Lapped in the head and performed an endlessly repeditive series of other feats while searching for the cause of the oily sump issue the said Hylomar (being introduced in mid November) may have globuled in the system during the "down" time. Who knows?

Like others I have found endless blobs of it on the sump filter, and assumed the external filter I have installed was also choked and so have replaced it, and cleaned and in some cases renewed the pipes concerned.

For my own peace of mind I have flushed the engine with engine oil flush, renewed the running in oil, and renewed / cleaned all filters, (not including the famous sludge trap) blown air countless times through the oilways and finally ran it for 10 mile today where the bike was able to warm up sufficiently.

The bike has done 570 miles from the its original rebuild, more technically a recreation from untold previous ebay and other purchases of various parts over the years. Once I've managed 1000 miles all up I'll be dumping the running in oil, renewing the external filter, checking the sump filter, as well as straining the running in oil to see what "goodies" it may contain.

And yep, I may even refill with new oil, and use a new oil filter for those who may be wondering!!

And No Thanks, I'll let Rolls Royce and others consume all the Hylomar they desire. I'm just a tad gun shy of the blue goo.

Well they do say "apply sparingly" but certainly a good lesson for any of us tempted to think more is better....

So the failure mode in the end was a blocked oil return at the oil tank end, fixed by fitting a complete replacement tank.  In addition the oil on the return which couldn't get back to the tank was leaking into the sump from behind the pump via the damaged oil pump mounting face in the crankcase.  This begs the question whether you would ever have been aware of this leak path without there being a blockage in the tank. Its possible you would have not noticed it provided enough oil was returning to the tank.   I guess there would have been excess oil going to the rockers too due to higher than normal pressure in the return line.

I'm just curious what you two used in the end to 'fill' the scratch behind the oil pump, some form of Devcon epoxy metal filler maybe?
I'm also keen to understand what actually blocked the pipe in the tank, was it actually all Hylomar or was there something else?

Having asked that question, I fully get it if you just beat the bloody thing with a hammer and threw it over the nearest hedge rather than investigating further.  I may well have done the same under such extreme provocation!  *smile*

Hi Ian,
The return (riser) tube in the tank was 90% blocked with remnants of Hylomar, and also slivers of rubber which must have been peeled off the inside (core) of the short 5/16" oil hose. I couldn't see any rubber removed from the ID of the new hose the Mandurah Marauder (AKA Gavin) used, so it could have happened a long time ago.

Maybe the reason the tank was off-loaded on Ebay? Take nothing for granted (as the actress said to the bishop).

Quality hose and a gradual taper on the pipes (no sharp edges) will prevent rubber being scraped off the hose ID.

 The dent (from a hammer or punch?) was sealed with a thin even smear of Loctite 518, and very importantly, the Al face was prepped with Loctite Primer (the "Active).

Oil escaping past the dent would have reduced the flow visible from the top of the pipe, and ended up under the crankshaft.
