Hi All

So, I'm still waiting for my new tools to arrive so nothing has been taken apart (yet), but...

I've noticed that the timing case outer is cracked. There seem to be quite a few on ebay. I understand that for some later models there was a rev counter take off from the inner case (?), but I think all I need is the outer cover.

I think mine is a long stroke; engine number ZA7 623

The parts book is a tad confusing (or at least it is to me), can anyone advise whether there are different outer cases for different models or not?

If they're hard to find I imagine it could be welded and cut back as it's cracked rather than shattered.

And I'm down with the Rona, thankfully it's mild so far.

G'day Poppy.
Yours is the long stroke so later short stroke covers won't fit.
You need 67-0146 or 67-0157 one is the A7 the other A7ST

Anyone got an opinion if it's worth finding someone to weld it and machine it, or is it better to find a replacement?

Welding and refinishing shouldn't cost much, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a slight colour difference in the weld area.

Further thought - one way to mitigate that would be for the welder to use alloy from another scrap cover as filler material.

A good example of why Allen screws are not a good idea for engine cases; it is too easy to over tighten them. If you have Allen screws in your engine cases, I suggest tightening them only with a screwdriver handle.

To add another word of caution. The covers differ depending on model and year, as does the inner cover and timing side crankcase half. Early covers only have two screws at the bottom, later have three, with an additional dimple added to the original casting profiles to take the extra thread.  BSA Piled Arms logo is cast into the cover, from memory on the Star Twin to start with, A7 was plain. But of course over time you get what you get. These features are shown in Musky's pic.

That is an easy repair, but the casting would do in the short term with a cold epoxy repair while the search begins. From the picture my specsavers show the crack to be over the dynamo chain, which runs in grease, so any leak from here should be minimal anyway.

 Swarfy.

Additional. Footrest fixing looks a codge. The proper footrests are plain tapers each side, with a special flanged retaining nut  67-4852 and  stud 67-4029 into the frame forging. Left side have left hand threads, nut is 67-4856, stud is 67-4041

I'm down with the Rona and waiting for tools, so major excavation will have to wait, but yes, it's going to be a case of check everything / compare it to the parts book etc.

Priority is the kick start mechanism. Bike was turning over OK on the kick, but has locked solid. Took the primary cover off and it felt like the issue was in the gear box not the engine.

It's going to be a slow steady project.

Tried that already, thanks though, and please nobody assume I know stuff!

I'm an sculptor and I've been into bikes all my life, but this is my first British rebuild.
